NEW AND USED BITUMEN TRUCKS: MAIN FEATURES AND VARIETIES
Bitumen transport is a kind of tank truck designed to transport heavy petroleum products (bitumen, fuel oil, sludge, and so on).
The main purpose which determines the design features of this type of tank trucks is the need to maintain the transported substances in the liquid state. Bituminous materials are poured into the tank through the upper hatches at temperatures between 150°C and 230°C; discharging is performed by gravity with the use of drainage equipment or using a pump. At the temperature of about 110°C - 120°C bitumen loses fluidity (however, depending on the type of bitumen, this temperature may be anywhere in the range between 80°C and 170°C). As a result, to maintain the required characteristics of the material, it is necessary to be able to maintain sufficient temperature inside the tank.
In the course of transportation on a relatively small distance, this is implemented with the use of a heat insulating container (the effect is achieved due to a layer of an insulating material, such as rockwool). However, this solution is unable to reduce temperature losses to zero, so additional heating devices are used in the course of a longer transportation. They include, most commonly, a 'steam jacket', as well as diesel, kerosene, thermo-oil and other heating systems. In this way, it becomes possible to maintain the internal temperature in the tank as high as 200°C - 250°C.
To maintain homogeneity of the substance, many bitumen transports are equipped with a mechanism to mix the contents.
It is also important to note that with the corresponding additional attachments, a bitumen transport can be quite easily turned into an asphalt distributor.
